Final Decision on Book Theme

Throughout these past few weeks i've discovered that I love switching the perspective of the lens and I feel like it resonates with us as humans and our ability to shift our minds perspective internally to see differently. To see things we didn't see so clearly at first. I want to experiment with this more and create a series of the same shots with different focuses.

Photographer for my Oral Project

Photographer: Michael O'Neill

I've decided to do my oral presentation on Michael O'Neill. After watching his documentary on Netflix called On Yoga: The Architecture of peace I was immediately mesmerized by his work, specifically his yoga photos and the meaning behind them. He connected two of my favorite things: photography and meditation. I felt very connected and inspired to Michael and his work so I researched him. His style of photography is very sublime for me. Here are some of his other images:

Reading Assessment 1

On Barrett Chapter 2, Describing Photographs

Format: Writing due to your blog next class

Answer the following questions about the reading:

  1. What is the author’s thesis? Our appreciation of photography comes with the fact that we have the ability to describe what we are seeing, which is a vital tool in order to understand what is being expressed.
  2. What examples does he use to support the thesis? He uses a bunch of important vocabulary that relates to the depth of description and uses many artists and their works as great examples.
  3. In your own words, how does Barrett define:
    1. Description: A gathering of factual observations not just about what is seen in the photo, but also the history of the photo. Considering the fact that some descriptions can be based off a judgement, descriptions can be both true and false.
    2. Subject and Subject Matter: Subject matter would the actual person, object, or thing in a photo whereas subject would be the underlying meaning beneath what is physically shown.
    3. Form: Form is important and goes hand in hand with the subject matter because form is how the subject matter is structured.
    4. Medium: medium is used to describe what an object is made up of once an object is unrecognizable.
    5. Style: Styler is a unique characteristic in a project from a certain artist. A repetitive recognizable resemblance to different pieces of art from the same artist.
  4. In your own words, summarize what Barrett means when he refers to:
    1. Comparing and Contrasting: in this case it’s comparing and contrasting one photographers work to either his own work, other artists work, or other pieces of art in order to find similarities and/or differences.
    2. Internal and External Sources of Information is basically studying an artists past through external sources to gain internal knowledge and perspective of an artist and what drives them to make the art they do.
  5. In your own words, summarize Barrett’s position on the relationship between:
    1. Description and Interpretation: That there are limitations that come with describing what is seen in a photograph because interpretations can be subjective no matter what the visual facts may be.
    2. Description and Evaluation: these relate to how a reaction is created through the description of the photograph which is seen in controversial pieces of art.
  6. Write a concluding paragraph that includes:
    1. Summary of at least two other points you think the author was trying to make
I think the author was trying to express how important photography is in the world. The author was also trying to express the importance of description because it relates to judgement and the reason we love art is because we can not only make judgements, but use ourselves to interpret or relate to a certain piece of work. I learned the difference between subject and subject matter considering those are two terms that I wasn’t too familiar with. I also learned what medium is since that’s a term i’ve never heard of in relation to photography. The author’s conclusions is overemphasizing the importance of description when it comes to judging and understanding a photographers work. I thought the piece was well written, informative, and gave me a new perspective on the way I evaluate art.

Assignment 1: Bracketing and Inspiration Images

Angelique's Bracketing Assignment
For this set of bracketing I mainly manipulated the exposure while keeping the aperture the same. I had my ISO set at 400. What I found to be interesting was the fact that I first tried to use a 75-300mm lens but it wasn't working out very well. No matter what I did the exposure was so bright that you could hardly see anything in the photo.

Inspiration Images

This is a picture from one of my favorite photographers, Michael O'Neil. I discovered Michael O'Neil through a Netflix documentary that was connected to yoga. In this photo and in many of his photos connected to yoga there is a connection with breathe and stillness between both the photographer and the model. I admire that he connects meditation with photography.

I found this photo on google by typing in "aesthetically pleasing photography" I took a scroll down the images and this one caught my eye because I love the imperfections found in photos. I also love capturing human creativity and expression and movements.
I found this photo on google as well and that I like about this photo is the perspective in which the main subject (the bird) was captured. I myself find that I experiment with the same perspective shots.
